Hot on the heels of the Persona 4 announcement came word via the Internet grapevine that the countdown on Square Enix's website was indeed counting down to the revelation that Chrono Trigger is coming to the DS. While I go take some valium to calm me down, enjoy the official announcement trailer. There's not much gameplay footage to go by, but I'm sure that will come in time. Get it? Time.

Hmm. The more good DS RPGs the better, I suppose, but Square Enix is slowly turning into $quare Enix with all of these remakes.

Honestly, I am 100% behind remaking a classic game so that it can be played on a portable system. Its going to be great to be able to play Chrono Trigger wherever I happen to be at the time.

With that said, I'm only 75% behind remaking old games simply to update their graphics. I'm sure there are a ton of people who never had a chance to play the old NES and SNES Square titles, so in that way its good, and I do love me some updated visuals, but I'm sure there are many more game ideas out there that could be receiving their development time and energy.

I'm pretty sure Chrono Trigger is going to look the same, because I've seen a _lot_ of forums that are all kinds of pissed off that Chrono Trigger "isn't really a new game" but "just another port". With a new dungeon and some kind of wireless feature that is either going to be lousy multiplayer or item trading (which would kind of rock, to be fair).

To put my Nintendo hat on for a minute, this kind of pisses me off.I'd much rather buy Chrono Trigger for $8 and play it on my widescreen HDTV with a Classic Controller than pay $40 for a dinky version that's only going to have a few new features I don't care about to justify the cost.

In fact, I want this so much that it looks like I'll have to crack open my Wii and install an SNES emulator with Wii Remote support and play it the way I want. Hey, while I'm at it, I can also install an SNES emulator on my DS and play Chrono Trigger that way, too! Sorry, Square. :(

(I kid, but I've seen like a dozen threads that amount to people saying they'll do this rather than buy the port because Square's just being greedy. I somehow doubt Squeenix has thought this aspect of the deal through.)

I admit, a high(er)-res Chrono Trigger for DS would defintely suck $25 from my gaming budget, but not a basically normal port, and certainly not for $40.
