Having recently acquired one of them thar newfangled RSS feeders, I was lucky, or unlucky, to come across this little tidbit on MMORPG.com. It seems the MMO game Fiesta has added In-Game weddings to its game play.

Yeah...

Ok, so this is where I vent a little bit. I have personally witnessed WoW, FFXI and so many more E-Weddings; gritting my teeth with aggravated frustration and utter disgust at the act in general. I do not get it. I can understand meeting people in-game, and I have been known to support a blooming online couple; it is highly possible to meet "the one" over the interwebs, but why get married there?! If you love each other enough as human beings to tie that kind of knot, then why get married in an imaginary world? Doesn't that take some of the romance... the reality out of it?

Don't get me wrong, I am into RP as much as the next lamp lover; this little gripe is about those who are not role-playing at all. They are "in love" ... oh pfft that. The whole concept seems silly to me. One step past cute sweet couple and a million steps towards overboard fantasy-world addiction.

Please, readers, enlighten me on the meaning behind this madness.

Well, to be honest it all comes down to how much you enjoy the actual role playing aspect of the game. If you are a role player, you are basically telling an interactive story with your character, and if that character's story leads to marriage, then it makes sense that there will be a wedding.

I have also attended online weddings of various sorts, and they are usually just barely rehearsed macrofests. But I honestly see nothing wrong with them. Would I have one myself? I'm not really sure, I used to be a hardcore role player, but nowadays I barely role play at all. So who knows.

There is also the fact that some people symbolize their IRL marriage with an in-game ceremony. In those cases it's not so much a matter of detracting from the reality of the event, but augmenting it. I know if I ever got married, there would be tons of in-game friends who wouldn't be able to attend. A WoW wedding would therefore allow them to participate in the event even in some small capacity.

As long as in-game weddings are followed up by group PvP to release the frustration and absurdity of the pixelated ceremony then they're okay by me.

I agree with CnC. One shouldn't get married in a game, unless one is forming an alliance...

Kyoka and I (wiseman) met in an MMO and prospered from there. We married in RL, but never thought about doing something similar in an MMO.

I respect (and try to myself) Role play and personal story lines, but for some reason, I can't seem to think of myself going far enough to marry online.

Though I don't mind at all if others like to do it~

I think it's one thing if a RL couple gets married in game. I mean why not? You are married in real life, you both play on the same server, so go for it.
