So 2008 was a pretty awesome year for RPGs, but what about 2009? Well the winter months look like they are shaping up to be fairly strong RPG-wise, at least as far as Square Enix is concerned. Today they announced their Fall Release calendar, and on it are names that all of us know, and many of us enjoy. Hit the jump to find out what Japan's most famous RPG publisher has in store for next year.

*Star Ocean: Evolution: On January 9, 2009 Star Ocean: Evolution releases for the PSP. Knowing that I didn't get a chance to play Second Story on the PS2, I'm greatly looking forward to this remake on the handheld console.

*Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride: An original Famicom title, Dragon Quest V has been remade for the DS, and will be released on February 17th. I know, I'm as shocked as you are, an RPG on the DS? What will they think of next, shoelaces in shoes?

*Star Ocean: The Last Hope: On March 3, the latest entry in the Star Ocean saga hits stores. This is another RPG exclusive for the XBox 360, so no doubt sales of the game will benefit from the widespread ownership of 360s nationwide. The Last Hope is a prequel to the current games, and tells the story of humanity's survival after World War III.

* Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume: Destiny by sinner sought. Tragedy by power wrought. Covenant is the third installment of the series, and the first to be published for Nintendo DS. Coming to DS on March 17th, this is the game I'm most excited for, because they had me at Norse mythology (*cough* Too Human *cough*).

Firion09

Whaddya mean, RPG's on the DS? What about Sonic Chronicles? Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker? The ability to play GBA RPG's?

Firion09

Or is the remark meant to be sarcastic, in which case I retract my statement?

Mandifesto

Much sarcasm Firion, which doesn't translate well through text. My apologies (no sarcasm there.)

I've heard some very mixed reviews of Star Ocean PSP from folks who played it-- apparently the overhaul leaves a lot of characters unrecognizable, and incorporates a lot of plot elements from the highly controversial Star Ocean 3.

The advance buzz I'm hearing on Valkyrie Profile DS is that it's amazingly, unbelievably, mind-blowingly hard. I've even heard it's the hardest game to date in the series. Given that several outlets in both the US and Japan docked points from Valkyrie Profile 2 for being too hard... I mean, how is Valkyrie Profile DS any harder? Does the game punch you in the face whenever you take damage?
