When Flagship Studios imploded last year, the gaming community let loose a great collective sigh of regret, since it meant that another MMO was doomed to failure.  Now Gamasutra is reporting that Hanbitsoft, the company that purchased Hellgate: Londonis going to keep the game alive, but as a free-to-play MMO.  You've heard me discuss my feelings on the future of online gaming, and here is just another piece of evidence that proves that I am right: if you can't be Blizzard, you best go free-to-play if you want to survive.  This particular bit of news has me so excited, I am going to reinstall Hellgate: London and give the game a second shot.  After all, it's Diablo light, right?  And I love me some Diablo.  Ultimately this is good news but weird news.  Expect a patch to be released soon that will give players two modes to choose from, and a new lease on life for the title itself.

Diablo light? Blasphemy!!!! To even associate Hellgate London with Diablo is a mortal sin.... was not impressed with Hellgate London, as you might have guessed...

Yes, but it must be admitted that HG:L was created by the old Blizzard North team, and therefore has some not-so-subtle similarities to D2. Love it or hate it, the bone structure is there.

I've been eyeing this game for a long time, but never got around to picking it up. If only there are 30 hours a day.... @_@
