It's been months since the implosion of Flagship Studios, and while most of the gaming community spent their time lamenting the death of Hellgate: London, I for one was sad for another reason. The studio had been working on another project, a Diablo-like MMO filled with magical charm and slightly creepy bobblehead models. Mythos had been on my highly anticipated games list, and so when it got pulled under with Flagship, my heart ached.
My heart can heal now, because in an interview with Gamepro a few days ago, Mythos creator Max Shaeffer has started up the project at his new home at Runic Games. Now, since the IP for Mythos is owned by someone else, the project Shaeffer is working on is being called the spiritual successor to the Flagship MMO. He says that while they started from scratched, the game Runic is building now is definitely an action-RPG that begins where Mythos left off. Once again Free-to-Play will be the savior of another MMO, as the Runic project will rely on microtransactions as it's income structure. FTP FTW, I say.
Heading back to the drawing board to rebuild a game that otherwise would not see the light of day, while a very good thing, means that it will be a while before we get to oggle Runic's new brainchild. Me? I'm just happy that this little gem of an MMO is getting a new lease on life, and I'm excited to see what Shaeffer and his crew come up with now that they have the breathing room to create something even better than Mythos. Just leave out the creepy bobblehead models, okay?
