Don't get me wrong, I love Cryptic Studios.  They brought me nothing but hours upon hours of super hero fun with City of Heroes, and for that I owe them a debt of gratitude.  When I heard that their next venture was Star Trek Online, I shuddered, because it seemed as if Cryptic was selling out to get the big IP numbers.  Now, however, PC World is reporting that there was big news from the NY ComiCon this year, especially where STO is concerned.  It appears that my favorite part of City of Heroes, the character creation system, is boldly going where no MMO has gone before.

Evidently the alien races of Star Trek are genetically linked, which enables them to breed in all sorts of crazy ways.  What this means is that the player can create whatever sort of alien hybrid they want, and this is what intrigues me.  I wonder exactly how many races will end up in the universe?  You could theoretically, with a large enough player base, have hundreds of thousands of races, but that would be a bit extreme.  Still, it's interesting to think about.

Which race would you play?  One of your making, or something a little more traditional?

Hotness! I am giddy looking forward to this game!

Although I am a bit confused, I thought the emphasis on this game was the ships? Don't get me wrong, I think endless character combinations will prove most interesting, however if they are going to be relatively limited, then why do it?

Vulcan-Borg FTW!!
