Yesterday Sony Online Entertainment announced that EverQuest, the mother of today's MMOs, celebrated its ten year anniversary. A lot has happened in ten years, and yet EQ still runs servers with a rabid, if limited, following.
“This year marks a major milestone for SOE and the entire interactive entertainment industry,” said John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment. “While it was hard work and a dedicated vision that brought EQ to fruition, without our loyal fans, EQ would not be the game that it is today. This year’s Fan Faire will definitely celebrate our players and their integral contribution to the EQ legacy!”
The Fan Faire John-boy mentioned there is the yearly celebration of all things SOE. This year they are holding it in Las Vegas between June 25th and June 28th. You can bet there will be a forest of elf ears and more than one set of armor to be seen.
In order to commemorate EQ turning ten, the city of San Diego named March 16th as "Sony Online Entertainment Day," although I think "EverQuest Day" would have been cooler. How awesome would it be to have a game immortalized forever in the annals of the mayoral seat of San Diego? I suppose SOE day will have to do, even if it does sound like a juice drink.
