Dungeons & Dragons co-founder and creator of the Blackmoor miniature gaming system, Dave Arneson has passed away late last Tuesday at the age of 61. Known as one of the founding fathers of modern pen and paper role playing, and indirectly the video game RPG genre itself, Arneson co-created the original D&D along with more publicly accredited Gary Gygax, who passed last year.

On a personal note, D&D, and more specifically the SSI computer games based off of the various incarnations of its ruleset, are a predominent factor in my interest in video games today. I doubt that I would be writing for this site (or that this site would even exist, for that matter) had it not been for the concepts introduced to me through Arneson and Gygax's work.

Anyone who has ever picked up a virtual sword to slay an imaginary dragon, whether around a kitchen table or in a digital landscape, has in some way been touched by Arneson's work, and the world will ever be brightened by his legacy.
