Mondays are tough on all of us. So much coffee and staring of into space thinking about what you actually did this past weekend to make it go by so quickly. Well fortunately for us the cool cats at Cryptic Studios have given us a big giant reason to be excited today, the announcement of a new vessel in their upcoming MMO: Star Trek Online.
The new vessel is not one to be reccond with and looks absolutely awesome. The ship class is called the Vo'Quv class from the Klingon Defense Forces and it is not your average bird of prey. This ship represents a very interesting new style for the Klingons, which let's me honest, if they're going to wage full fledge war against the Federation will need something like this to anchor their assualt. The ship is quite similar in style to the Next Generations: Vor'Cha class battlecruiser (which was also developed as a heavily armored cruiser). As Cryptic puts it:
"the Vo'Quv's main purpose is as a warship, and it should not be considered a support vessel. The Vo'Quv leads the fleet, taking the heaviest hits and dealing devastating strikes in return."

This is a very interesting direction for the Klingon's to go, considering their typical style of cloak and dagger like attacks. This beast can not only cloak, but also interrupt enemy communications and basically blast any non-flagship style Federation ship to the 1980's. Cryptic also explains this is not a bird that only fights from the front:
"Omnidirectional disruptor beam arrays hammer opponents' shields, and banks of torpedo launchers can be configured to launch arrays of photon and quantum torpedoes in seconds. In addition, the Vo'Quv packs a powerful tractor beam capable of holding most enemy ships in place for a final assault."
Bad, ass. feel free to read more on the brand new KDF flagship vessel and all the new ships in the STO universe, check out their "Ships of the line" section online.
While I believe this departure does much for the gameplay and balancing act that any successful MMO must have, it does stray slightly away from lore, which every game has to do a little bit of. My biggest concern here is the emphasis on ground based combat as well as interstellar. I would have rather they focused on one (a la EvE Online) instead of trying to do both, because in all likelihood, they won't be able to. But, I have been suprised before!
