Game Informer recently ran an article ‘Building the Perfect RPG.’ It is basically a list where G.I. takes the best part of various RPGs and cobbled them together to form the ideal RPG. G.I's perfect hero? Kain from Lost Odyssey. The perfect world? Fallout 3. And so on and so forth. I have no qualms with most of their choices, but if you asked me, my list will have less sandbox styled games.
Perfect Hero: I am okay with G.I.’s choice. However, to me, Lost Odyssey was overhyped and the characters were flat. Sure Kain has a wonderful background story, but I would rather read a book than play a game that tries to mimic a book. If it is up to me, I would have voted for Yuri from Shadow Hearts; he is hilarious and tragic at the same time.
Final Boss: Kefka from FF6 is a great choice! No arguments on that.
Party: Star Wars: Kotor. I have not played that yet, so I cannot really offer any opinion on it. My idea of a great party is basic: they kick ass and gets me through the dungeon REALLY quick. Being funny and memorable are a plus.
Conversation: Mass Effect. Hmm, having watched my husband played that game, I knew that its conversation style wasn’t my cup of tea. It’s too ‘free choice.’ Again, this goes back to my preference for games that are more traditional and linear.
World: Fallout 3. It is immersive and seamless. No arguments against. However, if I have to play an RPG set in such a depressing world, I would not play it for too long. RPG, in my opinion, equals to adventuring in a strange, exciting, and foreign world. If I could, I would love to explore Vyse’s world from Skies of Arcadia. Airships? Check. Pirates? Check. Foreign lands? Check!
Story: FFX! 100% agreed!
Strategy: Persona series. Err…when I was playing Persona 4, I was not strategizing at all. I think the only RPG I ever strategized was Chrono Cross.
Cooperative attacks: Chrono Trigger. Hello?! What about the Suikoden series? 106 characters with thousands of possible combinations?
Humor: Mario and Luigi series. Err…I haven’t played that yet, so I have no clue if it is as funny as G.I. thinks. I personally vote for Persona 4. Some of the support characters cracked me up!
What about you guys? If you can build your own RPG, who will you choose to be the hero and the villain? Which RPG will you set them in? And which gameplay style will you vote for? Do share!
