Thursday afternoon, while we were still on our World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Blizzcon announcement high, I got the chance to sit down with WoW Quest Designer Alex Afrasiabi. The result was the interview above, where Alex dropped a couple nuggets of lore gold and hinted at godly boss battles to come. Again we here that Cataclysm is a reforging of Azeroth, and to a largest extent the entire game of WoW.
Before you watch, however, I have to apologize for the mistakes you'll see in the production and for the sound quality. I really need to get myself a News anchor's mic. Yes, we realize that her name is spelled Azshara, but somehow it didn't occur to us when we were making the credits. Also, you might be a bit confused with a couple of the questions. The first question I asked is why, when so many other MMOs are expanding their universes would WoW implode? The titles in the video at this point talk about going backwards, which might be a bit disjointed with Alex's response.
Where the titles mention pirates I was in fact asking whether or not we will see expansion of the storyline now that we are returning to Heroic Deadmines. Alex let us know that the old world heroics are pure fan service, and there's not much you can do with continuity when you've already taken Van Cleef's head.
Of note, however, is that Alex gives us (unknowingly or otherwise) the origin of the Worgen. Evidently they originally came from the Emerald Dream, which makes me wonder why exactly they call it a dream -- sounds more like a nightmare to me. The second lovely bit of news he offered was the notion that not only will we fight Deathwing, we will also have to deal with the source of his madness, that damnedable old god whispering to him in the darkness.
